RUSSIAN RESURRECTION FILM FESTIVAL

At the Como from Wednesday to November 5

Among the highlights of this year's 21-film festival is a survey of the career of veteran filmmaker Karen Shakhnazarov, including his latest, The Vanished Empire (2007, 107 minutes), the opening night film. A coming-of-age, passing-of-the-times drama set in a drab 1970s Soviet Union, it's a quietly affecting story about rebellious youth and wasted opportunities, and a gentle political allegory.
