FIVE men will be charged over the Lindsay leaflet scandal that rocked the Liberal Party days before November's federal election.

The fake pamphlet bore the ALP logo and was from the non-existent Islamic Australia Federation.

NSW Police yesterday confirmed they had begun legal proceedings against five men, who would be charged under Section 328 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act, which deals with the printing and publication of election material.

The ploy was designed to help Liberal candidate Karen Chijoff. Her husband, Greg, and Gary Clark, husband of the retiring MP Jackie Kelly, were involved in the scandal.

Greg Chijoff and NSW Liberal state executive member Jeff Egan were expelled from the party.
